DETERIORATED CONCRETE
Concrete formation and deterioration through chemistry
Hardened concrete is chemically formed through hydration, curing.
Conversely concrete deteriorates largely by chemical means – carbonation/loss of pH, addition of aggressive and hostile chemicals through infiltration, breakdown of the cement bonds associated with aging, impact of the environment, etc.
Therefore a solutions based approach to concrete restoration must include chemistry as the remedy for the underlying causes of structure deterioration.
Cause of the deterioration vs. the symptoms
Ordinarily the “tear out and replace" or "patch over” approach to structure restoration completely overlooks the underlying causes of concrete failure addressing only the outward visible symptoms such as delamination and spelling. The real problems of corrosion next page, weakened cement bonds, chloride contamination, and carbonation are often neglected until the symptoms soon re-appear.
Things can be worse...
Many times structures are repaired by random patching, coating or painting over weak, contaminated, carbonated, corrosion riddled concrete. Not only such repairs are temporary, but often make things worse by trapping the contamination, trapping moisture and creating other incompatibilities, which tend to accelerate the deterioration process.
How to make things better
The cause of the deterioration MUST be addressed along with the symptoms to furnish an effective long-lasting solution. QuantiSure System application addresses the deterioration cause by providing for improvements in concrete strength, water-soluble chloride content reduction, moderation of pH (in carbonated structures), improved static pressure and gas resistivity of concrete, improved chemical resistivity, and corrosion reduction of the imbedded (concrete covered) reinforcement. Once the properties of concrete have been chemically improved/restored meaningful durable repairs can be made.
Benefits of our approach
QuantiSure System provides an effective restoration solution by modifying the properties of the existing concrete without excessive replacement. QuantiSure System prevents future deterioration. The QuantiSure System is a long-term solution to the problem of concrete deterioration. The use of QuantiSure System and QuantiSHIELD extends structure service life.

CORROSION
Concrete corrosion process
Reinforcing steel corrosion is the most common cause of failure in concrete
Structures. Steel corrosion is an oxidation process requiring the presence of
Air (oxygen) and moisture. Corrosion is promoted by anions, like chlorides, and
An acid environment. Corrosion is inhibited by an alkali, contaminant
Free environment, restrictive to air and water penetration.
In a fresh new concrete rebar is protected by the high pH and low contamination levels. However, as time passes, the pH of concrete falls. Chlorides and other contaminants infiltrate concrete. Electrochemical activity increases. The process perpetuates itself as the oxidized rebar expands forcing concrete to crack and delaminate thus encouraging air and water penetration. From there the problem grows exponentially - the more concrete fails the more likely it becomes to fail.
Once started, rebar corrosion cannot be stopped by simply waterproofing the surface. In fact, application of a waterproofing membrane or coating routinely makes the situation worse by trapping chlorides and moisture inside and not allowing for proper drying of the substrate.
QuantiSure system corrosion solution
Quantishield concrete restoration materials are chemically reactive. Properly applied the materials penetrate to combine with the cement phase and deposit on the imbedded steel components.
QuantiSure compete system creates a non-corrosive environment internal to concrete by isolating moisture from the rebar, by not allowing chloride penetration even under the static pressure (such as applied, for example, by car tires), by removing and completing the existing chlorides, and by moderating ph.
In addition, corrosion inhibitors used as part of the QuantiSure process are direct contact inhibitors being delivered to the imbedded steel surfaces to insulate and pacify active sites as well as prevent the deleterious action from starting.
The application of QuantiSHIELD does not prohibit concrete from drying. Concrete retains its ability to "breathe".
Our system is easy to apply flexible system for restoration or maintenance

SEVERE ENVIRONMENT
Severe Environment Problem
Concrete exposed to contamination and stress beyond present in every day ambient environment is considered severe.
Although cured to a solid state concrete is not inert. Acids and other contaminants attack the chemically reactive phase of concrete in water treatment plants, chemical plants, marine structures, pulp and paper, food processing facilities, mines, etc.
Severely contaminated concrete in addition to common problems of corrosion, carbonation, etc. tends to break down as the chemical cement bonds are interrupted or dissolved by contaminants.
This influence is specific and aggressive and severe. Protecting and repairing such structures presents an additional set of circumstances that are a challenge to address and rectify.
QuantiSure and the use of QuantiShield Products offer the Solution
As the reason for breakdown is existence of the chemically reactive phase in concrete, the solution is to bind the available "free" sites into the new ties thus prohibiting them from being accessible and interfered with by contamination. Application of the QuanitSure System adds these new chemical ties eliminating reactive sites and thus making concrete more durable, resistant and inert.
Adding QuantiShield to the restoration program of structures in chemical and hostile environments addresses the deterioration cause providing for more durable long-lasting results.
Additionally QuantiSure is used for durability improvement, protection, and maintenance of the damaged and undamaged surfaces in areas of contamination or impact such as industrial floors, loading zones, etc.
NEW CONCRETE
Protecting new concrete
The protection of new concrete is widely recognized and preferred method of structure preservation. New concrete protection, even by coating or sealing, will slow down the contamination and breakdown of concrete due to use.
However, coatings are expensive and have a finite life where they wear out and need to be replaced in a timely manner if the structure is to be maintained. Sealants are permeable to chloride under pressure (static head, such as applied by car tires) and generally also need to be reapplied as they exist at or close to the surface.
QuantiSure System advantage
In addition to the common benefits of a coating or sealant, such as reducing/prohibiting water penetration, QuantiSure treated concrete resists static pressure(such as applied, for example, by car tires), providing superior chloride protection. QuantiSure treated concrete has greater wearability and improved strength/durability. QuantiSure treated concrete resists chemical breakdown when exposed to hostile and aggressive environments. QuantiSure treated concrete resists pitting and spalling due to freeze/thaw or sometimes incongruities of modern day construction. QuantiSure does not alter structure appearance and does not wear off providing permanent solution to the task of structure preservation and protection.
Long-term cost benefits associated with QuantiSure use are substantial.
QuantiSure is easy to apply and can be incorporated in any construction detail.
COST BENEFITS
Immediate cost benefits during restoration
Ordinarily during restoration a portion of a structure is lost. Extensive removal protocols commonly specify excavation to “good” concrete. The more concrete is lost/removed the more needs to be replaced. This increases direct disposal/replacement material cost as well as project duration, downtime, noise, other forms of pollution, etc.
If any portion of the structure, normally designated for demolition during reconstruction, can be improved/recovered by adding the lost chemistry, increasing strength, buffering pH, reducing permeability, reducing/complexing chlorides and inhibiting corrosion of the imbedded reinforcement, the savings are extensive. Costs are reduced by eliminating the unnnecessary "remove and replace".
The use of the QuantiSure System also reduces pollution, noise and other indirect costs as well as shortens downtime and improves safety.
Long term cost benefits after the restoration
QuantiSure advantage in providing superior quality repairs is addressing the cause of the deterioration rather than symptoms.
By treating the structure to prevent it from deteriorating further, not only in the repair areas but in places where the damage may not yet be obvious, QUANTISURE furnishes the long term protection. As the cause of the deterioration is eliminated by QuantiSure , the symptoms such as delamination and spalling as well are stopped from re-occurring.
By improving the general resistance of the structure to deterioration QuantiSure reduces the maintenance and future repair expense associated with structure use.
Long term cost benefits for new concrete
QuantiSure is aplied to new structures as a form of preventive maintenance and protection. Besides being an excellent way to prevent the onset of deterioration and specifically corrosion, the benefits of such application are cosidered permanent. For long term structure protection and maintenance cost reduction QuantiSure system is superior.
